Our wood burning insert emits a pungent odour when wood is burned at high heat - what could this be & how do we rectify?! | |
This is the second season that we have had this problem. We need HELP to find and correct the problem. We have a disgusting, thick, odour that comes about when we load the wood stove to the max with wood/burn at high heat.
We have a wood stove insert; properly maintained, has/always has had a chimney cap.
It is inserted with a metal chamber around it. The air flows/circulates through (between the insert and the metal) and is blown out, it has a fan.
When we burn a few logs: no smell.
When we load the insert to the max (when it is really cold out or when we go to bed) the higher heat causes the WORST and MOST PUNGENT SMELL! It is strong, even wakes us up in the middle of the night. It’s gross and sometimes we need to open a window!
We thought it was a dead animal or bird as it resembles a dead animal smell.
However, being that this the second season, any bird or mammal would be mummified by now and would not emit such an odour?
It is not ‘paint’ – the outside of the unit was painted once, but with proper stove/fireplace paint. The odour comes from the inside, due to high heat.
It causes us to feel nauseas (due to the gross smell) but it’s embarrassing if we have company.
PLEASE HELP! We THINK it may be something in the chamber, the space between the insert itself and the metal.
Thanks!
