it may just need a good old fashioned cleaning. however, if you maintain it on a regular basis then you may need a thermopile replaced.

thermopile? what the heck is a thermopile? i did a search on this site for the word and zip, zero, nada, nothing.
From: Jay
a thermopile is a fancy name for the thermocouple--the vertical tube that is heated by the pilot light. the fireplace uses a thermocouple to produce dc electrical current. when the thermocouple is heated by the pilot flame, it produces a small amount of dc electrical current, this lets the gas valve know that the pilot is burning. if the thermocouple has a loose connection, the valve that controls the gas flow will shut off, putting out the fireplace flame.
try this first: blow out the complete pilot assembly after allowing the assembly to cool and the pilot is out. use a can of the compressed air used to clean computer keyboards.
if that doesn't work, and the thermocouple tip is encircled with the pilot flames and its tip is glowing red but the fireplace fails to remain on, the thermocouple is might be worn out and need to be replaced.
the problem could be a poor electrical contact in the wiring circuit, or a defective switch, if the appliance is equipped with one.
