When your wood is delivered it must be stacked to determine if you have received the proper quantity. A nice rectangular pile can be measured accurately and stored under cover.
The best location for your wood to season will be an area that receives good sunlight and also has good air flow. Normally a freestanding pile is going to dry at a faster rate than one backed up against a shed because the movement of air can more readily draw the moisture from the wood. If your wood is purchased early (ideally before you have finished using your stove or fireplace), there will be no need to cover it until the beginning of the burning season. Remember that smaller pieces of wood dry better and will make it much easier to start your fires quickly.
We have found the best method for stacking wood to be the log cabin style where each row of wood is opposite the one above and below it. This method allows for good air circulation, giving you drier wood when winter comes.
You should locate the bulk of your wood away from the house. This will keep termites and snakes away from your home. However, when the burning season begins keep about a weeks worth of wood in a convenient and dry location. |
